Plant Breeding and Genetic Section

This Section was established in 1973 and now working on following objectives:
Development of high yielding, early maturing, short statured, heat tolerant, climate adaptive varieties with high lint percentage, desirable fibre characteristics and genetic inbuilt resistance against insect pests and diseases especially for cotton leaf curl virus (CLCuV).
Development of F1 commercial cotton hybrids.
Maintenance of Cotton Gene Pool containing 5765 cotton genotypes (Local and Exotic).
Multiplication of Basic seeds for seed companies (Government/Private).
Training of student (Internship) from various Universities/Colleges to get experience for their fresh job.
To train the officers from various organizations (Government/Private) about the latest application technologies.
To evaluate the performance of promising strains of different breeders of Pakistan in National Coordinated varietal trial (NCVT).
To evaluate the performance of promising strains of different breeders of Punjab in Provincial Cotton Coordinated Trial (PCCT).
To evaluate the performance of commercial hybrids in National Commercial Hybrids Trail (NCHT).

he varieties developed at Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan occupied more than 50% area during 2000-2001 and 70% in 2006-2007 in Punjab as detailed below. Most of the CCRI's varieties are early maturing and escaped the onslaught of American bollworm.

Greenhouse facilities:

A well established greenhouse facilities are available at the Breeding & Genetics Section for testing of various breeding materials in pots in control environments where light, temperature and humidity are controlled as and when required. Around the year cotton plants can be planted for experimental purposes.

Development of Cotton Hybrids:

The F1 Commercial Hybrid Programme at Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan was undertaken in 1995 under the directive of the President, Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Till now 5 combiners have been identified of 27 crosses giving higher yield by 22-25% over the standard commercial varieties. All hybrids were found resistant to CLCV (old race). Three more new combinations have been identified out of 55 crosses giving higher yield 22-28% over the best commercial variety. Training to 14 Public and Private Seed Corporations for hybrid seed production has been provided. Further research work on the development of GMS lines to facilitate hybrid seed production is in hand.

Technique for screening of breeding material against Virus:

New technique to screen the breeding material was established. This technique consists of creating high inoculums pressure in the field and screening of the breeding material. The breeding material is planted in the beginning of March in between the ratooned lines of virus affected susceptible variety from which ready inoculums is transferred through whitefly to the young seedlings.
